Best 523A Tactic • Five-Back Stability, Three-Forward Punch

Formation reasoning, vulnerabilities + fixes, and 523A tactics across all strength buckets.

523A (3 CB + RB/LB wing-backs, 2 CMs, LW–ST–RW) is a balanced “secure base + sharp front three” formation. The back five protects you against counters, while the two CMs connect the midfield to the wide forwards and the striker. It can play proactive football without becoming reckless, as long as your line roles match the plan. Below, you’ll see the exact 523A tactic setups by strength bucket, displayed in the same grid style as your tactic overview.

Quick notes: 523A can be played positively because the back five gives you insurance, but your attacking intent must still be matched by pressing. Keep tempo realistic against stronger teams. Marking is usually zonal because you have numbers at the back. Offside trap is rarely needed with five defenders—don’t gamble on it when you already have cover. Tackling should match referee strictness; aggressive is fine often, reckless only with lenient refs.
